Steve’s Fall Campaign Kickoff Remarks, August 23, 2018
Steve spoke briefly at the campaign kickoff at the West Sixth Barrel Room. See his main points below.
Thanks to all for coming today and for all your past support.
With that help, we achieved Victory in the primary:
25,000 votes, up roughly 4,000 votes over the nearest competitor
9,000 more votes than in the 2014 primary
Top place in 10 districts and a virtual tie in the 6th and 12th
The fall campaign theme is People, Purpose, Place.
Rather than talk about themes generally, let me give you an idea of what I have actually been doing in the last few days.
Yesterday morning, Councilmember Brown and I met with the Neighborhoods in Transition Task Force, planning for public input sessions. Councilmember Brown chairs the Task Force, which I established.
Yesterday afternoon I met with the Affordable Housing Fund Board, where we have built or preserved 1500 units since the Fund was established in 2014. Using $11 million in city funds, we have leveraged more than $100 million in investments in much needed affordable housing for Lexington-Fayette County.
This morning I brought greetings to the new project at Greenhouse 17 and met with the new chair of our Environmental Commission.
Last week I chaired a special council Committee of the Whole meeting to hear public comment on the proposal for a new city hall.
I continue to work on the issues that have been my focus:
Preservation of land: smart development, key role in holding the line
Farm to Table
Equity and inclusion
Going forward, I intend also to emphasize the value of continuity, and the calm, steady, fair leadership I have provided in my role as Vice Mayor.
With your help, I will continue working and leading on people, purpose and place.
